Let me be honest, Netflix has indeed overly hyped about their tv series Ghoul; this hype instead would have rightly been placed if it was Sacred games they were talking about. However, that does not mean that Ghoul is a bad series. Those who belong to my generation will know how pathetic Indian television is. We grew up in an era where the internet freshly came into existence, youtube didn’t yet exist and the telly was the only source of entertainment. We know how bad those series genuinely are. One season stretches for over a 100 episodes, most of each episode will have the camera showing the stunned faces of characters with that same old “Dhoom tana nana” music in the background, this will go on for over 5 min from face A to face B back and forth. Ughh !! Pathetic!
Having seen those true low-grade series having such bad and non-realistic scripts lacking creativity usually revolving around the same old themes of love or family, like as if nothing else exists. With the only exception being CID, comes these two series by Netflix superbly written series. Which feels like that excellent biryani you get to eat in a fabulous restaurant after having eaten in a university mess for a six-month stretch or longer!
If I were to describe ghoul in one like as a critic, I would say, “It is not extraordinary, but it is different, and that is why you must watch it.”
Ghoul for the Indian audience is a genuinely innovative 3 episode miniseries starring lead character Radhika Apte, who also happens to be in the series Lust Stories and Sacred Games by Netflix. Personally, her acting style is far better suited for Ghoul rather than Sacred Games. Ghoul indeed is a breath of fresh air and so is sacred games when compared to other television series. They have broken the norms regarding script and theme in a very bold manner, and the reviews reflect the fact the most critics just like me love the series. There is nothing extraordinarily great about Ghoul, but merely the fact that it's not in line with the convention of television drama makes you want to see it more. Ghoul and scared games give us the Indian audience a peek into what more can be done and how things can be done differently with regards to filmography. With more series such as these two in the works, I am sure it will soon be game over for Indian television in a few decades if they do not up their standards and creativity. With the Indian generation now more familiar with the internet and less dependant on the telly, it may be possible.
Ghoul Trailer Netflix
The last episode of Ghoul leaves room open for another season and with it the potential for writers to construct the series into an extraordinary one, with HBO series of Game of Thrones and alike setting new standards for television the writers of Ghoul would have to bring in their A game. At the end of the 3 part series, I for sure wanted to see another season of it.
It is also interesting that the series had a not so subtle message visible and not hidden in it, with regards to extremism and a non-secular government abusing its power, it described a scenario about what may happen to a country like India if we secular Indians do not keep a watch on the government. Or better still get brainwashed by the government or others with misguided ideals and their superb oratory skills. Point to be noted, my fellow countrymen.
Now coming to Scared Games, boy! Oh! Boy! was this series good !!... I think now that Game of Thrones is over I am going to follow this one religiously. That is how much I like this one. The script is well written, and like GOT this one too is based on a book. Some of the dialogues are just amazing and have stuck with me. There is a decent amount of suspense mounting up and a nice cliffhanger at the end. I have found a substitute for my GOT addiction.
Sacred Games Trailer Netflix
I generally hate Indian actors and do not approve of their acting skills, and when I say that Nawazuddin Siddiqui acting was terrific, you better believe it! Top notch acting! Top notch!
I have indeed not seen a better actor than him, but it could also be that his style has found the perfect role as is often the case with western actors.
I cannot wait for the next season. The series also has Saif Ali Khan as one of the lead actors, and he too has done decent acting but no way he can outdo Siddiqui.
It is on the theme of terrorism, and generally, a few Bollywood movies are made on this theme, but they try to compress an otherwise large script into that 3-hour movie and combined with lousy VFX, it is just a recipe for disaster. Being a tv series this one so far has none of it.
Good Job Netflix. Cannot wait for the next season and those new series in development which a little birdie told me would be filmed in Goa!
Oh, yea! I may be a small blogger, but I too have my sources!
